How to get a driving license in Vietnam?

When expats decide to live and work in Vietnam, it is imperative that they could drive a motorbike, car.  In these cases, for the long run, they must get a Vietnamese driving license. Owning a driving license in Vietnam is the compulsory requirement for both locals and foreigners if they would like to take a ride. The fact is that, many people do ride vehicles without any licenses which goes against the law and they get into troubles, pay fine if being stopped by the policemen.

If you would like to rent or own a motorcycle, a car in Vietnam, you must be in possession of a valid Vietnam driving license. You are not allowed to drive with your original driver's license or your international driver's license. It is obliged to comply with Vietnamese laws to request a driving license in Vietnam if you are a resident of the country.

Converting Your Motorbike Driving License to Vietnamese license

It is the easiest way to get a Vietnam motorbike driving license. In other words, you would forget about theory or riding tests but this could be done only if you already have your home country motorbike driving license. You would simply convert your home country driving license to the Vietnamese driving license.

What documents are required?

  1. Notarizing copies of your passport

  2.  Notarizing copies of  Vietnam visa

  3. Home country motorbike driving license

Processing time: It normally takes 7-10 working to have a Vietnam motorbike driving license issued.

Applying For a Vietnamese Driving Licence

This is much more difficult way to get a Vietnam motorbike driving license. You need to take both theory and riding tests. What a shame that all questions and instructions are only in Vietnamese!

Then you wait for your turn to do the theory and riding tests that can take up to a month.
