What to do when the passport is lost in Vietnam ?

Lossing a passportwould be definitely a nightmare of all travellersdue to some unexpected reasons such as: your carelessness, your wallet was stolen or you dropped it somewhere. No matter what happened, the very first thing you need to do isjust be patient. This problem is not rare for tourists in Vietnam so the country has a specific process to deal with it. You just need tofollow our guide in order to get a new passport and a new visa as well for not staying illegally in Vietnam.

Step 1: Report to the nearest Vietnamese Police station as soon as your passport is lost


The very first thing you have to do is to go to the Vietnamese Police office and tell them what happened as soon as possible. Two important things you need to claim are time and place your passport is lost. Police officers may ask you to provide some other detailed information and fill out the report form exactly what happened. After your report police stamped, you will take it for the next step.

Step 2: Get new passport at your Embassy/ Consulate

As soon as you have a report police, you need to collect these following papers and go to your Embassy for getting a new passport:
  • Police report
  • 02 passport-sized photos
  • Your passport copy
You are in emergency case so that there is no need for an appointment in advance. Officers there will guide you required steps to apply a new passport. After finishing all necessary procedure, you will wait in 2 – 3 working days until your new passport is issued. Get it for the final step.

Step 3: Get your new Vietnam visa at Vietnam Immigration Department

When your new passport is granted, a letter (diplomatic note) which requests the Vietnamese Immigration Department’s assistance for issuing a replacement visa for your new passport will be given to you by your Embassy or Consulate.
Requireddocuments you need to collect and present to Vietnamese Immigration Department:
  • Police report
  • Your new passport
  • Diplomatic note
  • New travel document form Embassy
  • Cash to pay for new visa

  • Hanoi: 44 Tran Phu, Ba Dinh, Hanoi
  • Ho Chi Minh: 333-337 Nguyen Trai, Distric 1, Ho Chi Minh city
  • Da Nang: No.7 Tran Quy Cap, Da Nang city
Special advice about passport while travelling
  • Make at least 02 copies of your passport in case you need to use it for applying a new passport and visa
  • Your new passport has a new passport number that is different to the old one so that it is necessary to check other relating documents such as: your airline booking, your visa for another countries to make sure your new passport number match these documents.
