What is Vietnam Visa on Arrival?


Vietnam Visa on Arrival (VOA) is also known as Vietnam landing visa or Vietnam airport visa. As its name, it is an easy and convenient method of getting visa to visit Vietnam that applicant is permitted to collect visa upon his or her entry. It is only applicable for those who travel to Vietnam by air. 


To apply it, you are required to obtain the pre-visa approval letter (the visa approval or invitation letter) through a local visa agency in Vietnam before your travelling. The kind of letter allows you to check in at your departure airport and receive a full visa sticker on your passport at the Vietnam international airport. 


Is VOA legit?


Yes, Vietnam visa on arrival is 100% legitimate. With this method, you will need to obtain a visa approval letter issued by the Vietnam Immigration Department prior to your departure to Vietnam.

The visa approval letter is a mandatory document which allows you to board your airplane and collect your visa stamp at Vietnam airport.

The Government of Vietnam has officially issued about 20 different types of streamlined visa on arrival which is granted to foreigners depending on their travel purposes. Typically, there are two common types frequently used by most of visitors:

1. Passport with at least 6 months of validity. The passport must have at least two empty pages. In case your passport doesn’t have any blank pages, a separate visa is also available.

5. Stamping fee: it is payable in cash on arrival (USD or VND) – 25USD/person for 1 or 3 month single visa or 50USD/person for 1 or 3 month multiple visa.

How much is a Visa on arrival?


Regarding to Vietnam visa on arrival fee,  be clearly noted that there are merely two fees invloved: visa service fee and stamping fee. Other than two compulsory charges, there is no extra fee required. 
1) Visa service fee: this fee is paid through a visa agencies therefore, it varies from this agency to another. 
2) Stamping fee: Unlike visa service fee, visa stamping fee is paid to the Vietnam Immigration at the airport. It only varies according to the number of entries (single or multiple) as stated in your visa approval letter.

(*) Visa service fee is quoted per person in USD. Visa stamping fee is paid in cash at the airport in US Dollar or Vietnamese Dong. Other currency is not highly recommended as it might cause a bad exchange rate. No credit/debit card is accepted at the airport. 


Urgent/super urgent service fee: you need to pay extra fee to speed up your processing time


+ 10usd/person for 1 working day processing time


+ 25usd/person for  4 working hour processing time


+ 50usd/person for 2 working hour processing time


How long does it take to process a Vietnam visa on arrival?


The normal processing time is 2 working days for tourist visa and about 5 working days for business visa (excluding Saturday, Sunday and international/national holiday).


Processing time is also different by nationality. Some special nationals, it takes up 7 working days to process their visa applications. 


In urgent cases, you can to apply emergency visa and have your Vietnam visa letter sorted out within some working hours with extra fee.


Important notices:


• Visa on arrival  is ONLY applicable  if you travel to Vietnam by air. All entries by road or sea is advised to contact Vietnam Embassy or Consulate to apply a full visa on your passport in advance.


• Passport must be valid at least 6 months beyond at your arrival date to Vietnam. Two empty pages on your passport are mandatory.


• In order to get a visa stamped on your passport at the Vietnam airport, you have to obtain a visa approval letter before arriving Vietnam airport. 


• Your visa validity is granted according to your visa approval letter. You are permitted to enter Vietnam on or after the entry date and must leave before the exit date as stated in the visa letter. 


• As Vietnam visa on arrival is accepted at any international airport of Vietnam , therefore you still pick up a visa sticker if you switch your actual arrival airport in last minutes.


• Children travelling to Vietnam with their own individual passport shall pay the same visa price as adults do.


• No government website has offered Vietnam visa on arrival until now. All website you have found to provide visa on arrival service are commercially private visa agencies. Don’t get yourself confused with those having organizational domains like gov., org., etc.

1. Do I have to show return ticket to get visa on arrival in Vietnam?

It is possible to extend your Vietnam visa as long as the total time of your stay is less than 6 months normally. For example if you apply for a 3 month tourist visa, you are able to extend it for another 3 months.  The extension period obviously depends on your original visa type and nationality. 

5. How long will my Vietnam visa on arrival be valid?

The visa will be valid for 30 or 90 days from arrival, depending on the option you choose at the time of application.

6. Can we get Vietnam visa on arrival through land border?

You can’t. Visa on arrival  is only applicable for those who travel to Vietnam by air. For those entering Vientam by land or sea, you have to contact Vietnam Embassy/Consulate for visa arrangement beforehand. 

7. How long advance should I apply for Vietnam visa on arrival?

There is no specific regulation about how long in advance you need to get Vietnam visa on arrival. However, to secure your trip to Vietnam, you need to apply at least one week ahead for tourist visa and 2 weeks in advance for business visa prior to departure. It is always better to sort out your visa as soon as possible to avoid any unfortunate issue can happen to your application. 

9. Is it possible to fly to another airport than the one I have filled in on my application form?

Yes. This is not a problem at all. As long as you enter Vietnam via an international airport, you can apply for your visa. Make sure you have printed out the correct documents.

10. I arrive with an airplane but want to leave with a bus, boat or train. Is that allowed with the VOA procedure?

Yes. With the visa you can leave the country through all borders. With a multiple entry visa, except for the first time (when you need to arrive by plane), you can travel back into Vietnam via the borders as well.
