In Asia, the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park contains the oldest karst, between 400-450 million years old. According to the analysis of sediment, Son Doong Cave itself is relatively young and only 3 million years old.

Son Doong Cave is formed on the edge of a fault zone and has been carved out by the mighty Rao Thuong River. It erodes away the limestone, forming the enormous tunnel beneath the Annamite Mountains. Through many years, giant sinkholes (or called as dolines) have collapsed sometime up to 300 thousand years ago, creating massive openings to the outside space.

As it can be known, the first expedition had been halted by an 80m high calcite barrier, which was considered as the ‘Great Wall Of Vietnam’. Son Doong Cave is recognized to be the largest cave in the world after the second expedition in 2010 when the Great Wall was finally climbed.

Son Doong Cave has the length of over 5 km with sections reaching up to 200m tall and 150m wide. It is very large enough to include an entire New York City block, completes with 40 story skyscrapers. They only can access this place by foot, and the dense jungles surrounding Ban Doong prohibit the cultivation of most crops. Discovering Son Doong Cave has created new opportunities for the community, their life is easier. They can earn extra income by working closely with Oxalis to protect the conversation of the area.
